Jarhead

saw jarhead tonight. it was good, but as with most military movies, i wouldn't want to revisit it. this one wasn't as depressing, though. my boys jake gyllenhaal and peter sarsgaard gave really good performances, and so did jamie fox. the movie makes me thankful that there are people in this country who are willing to fight, because i certainly would not be able to handle it. btw, this is not the best choice as a date movie. it pretty much kills the mood... just a warning.

confessions

okay, so this is the third madonna-related post in a row, but i can't help it. i bought the new madonna cd today... it's wonderful. starts off great with "hung up," holds up okay with "get together," gets great again with future second single "sorry," hits snag with "future lovers" and "i love new york," and then has a great run from "let it will be" all the way through the end to "like it or not." stand outs for me are "hung up," "sorry," "let it will be," "forbidden love," "jump," "issac," and "push." ususally there's at least one song on a madonna album that i can't stand, but this time everything is listenable. it's almost what i refer to as a "wilson phillips" album. i know it's weird, but theirs was the first album where i liked every single song on the cd. not one song that i did not like. i think this comes close. my only real complaint is that i feel madonna chose too many hard-driving club beats over melodies with natural hooks. oh, well.

btw, the madonna themed night at the abbey was a lot of fun. all madonna music, all night. since it was guest list only, i think everyone who came was a big madonna fan, and so the crowd seemed even happier than usual. kavita and i were very excited when they played "like a prayer." ernesto, kavita and i didn't get any swag though. by the time we got around to asking where to get the free cds and posters, they were all gone. we tried to track down some mysterious unattractive drag queen who was apparently handing stuff out, but bitch was nowhere to be found. we walked the streets of santa monica looking for her/him, but we came up empty. still, we had a good time.

Like A (Singing) Virgin

oh god, if you want to see the most hysterically awful thing ever, go to:

http://www.vh1.com/shows/series/but_can_they_sing/voting/
index.jhtml

it's the VH1 site for their celebrity singing contest (american idol style). watch bai ling's rendition of "like a virgin". it's the most jaw-dropping-yet-mesmerizing performance i've seen in a long time.

btw, antonio sabato jr. is also pretty bad, but he sure looks good!
